Discovering St Anne's Church History
How the Parish Started in Glasgow
The St Anne's parish began in 1899. It was created to serve Catholic people living in the East End of Glasgow. At first, the church was located on David Street in the Gallowgate area. A school for the children of the parish was also built there.
Building a New, Bigger Church
Over time, both the church and the school became too small. More and more people joined the parish. Archbishop Donald MacKintosh suggested a solution. The school was made bigger by using the space from the old church. The parish then bought land from the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. This land had been used as a children's refuge and hostel. The new, larger St Anne's Church was built on this new site in 1933.
The Architect Behind St Anne's Design
The church was designed by a famous architect named Jack Coia. He created the church in a mix of two old styles: Romanesque and Byzantine Revival. Jack Coia designed about 30 buildings for the Catholic Church in his career.
Unique Shape and Special Recognition
St Anne's Church has a special cross-like shape. This comes from its semi-circular reinforced concrete arches that meet in the middle. Archbishop Mario Conti once called St Anne's the "Jewel of the Archdiocese." This shows how beautiful and important the church is.
