History of St Anne's Church
St Anne's Church was built for a group called the Oblates of St Mary Immaculate. The church was designed by Edward Welby Pugin. His brothers, Peter Paul Pugin and Cuthbert Pugin, helped build it. Edward had planned for a tall tower on the southwest side, but it was never built.
The first stone of the church, called the foundation stone, was placed on May 9, 1875. This important event was done by James Brown, who was the Bishop of Shrewsbury at the time. The church officially opened its doors on October 28, 1877.
Later, more parts were added to the church. A presbytery, which is a house for the priests, was built between 1884 and 1885. In 1934, side aisles were added to the church, making it larger.
The Oblates of St Mary Immaculate looked after the church for many years. In September 2010, they handed over the church to the Diocese of Shrewsbury. Today, the church is served by Father Bernard Forshaw and Reverend John Boggan.
