Building St Barbara's Church
The church building you see today was constructed between 1930 and 1931. It was designed by an architect named Henry Paley. He worked with a local person, Herbert Jackson, who helped make sure the building was constructed correctly.
Laying the First Stone
The very first stone for the church was placed on September 28, 1930. This important step was done by Sir Alfred Herbert, who was a well-known businessman in the area. The church was officially opened and dedicated on September 26, 1931.
Why the Church Was Not Fully Finished
The church was never completely finished as originally planned. This was because there wasn't enough money to build everything. Some parts that were planned, like the western sections, two porches, a special area for baptisms, and a bell tower, were never built.
The total cost to build the church was about £17,644. Sir Alfred Herbert donated £975 of this money. He gave this money to build a special area inside the church called the Lady Chapel. This chapel was built to remember his second wife, Florence, who had passed away in 1930.
