St Barbara's Church is a special church located in Earlsdon. This is a part of Coventry in the West Midlands, England. It is an active Anglican church, which means it belongs to the Church of England.
The church was built between 1930 and 1931. It was made to replace an older, smaller church nearby. The design was created by Henry Paley, an architect from Austin and Paley in Lancaster. A local man named Herbert Jackson also helped with the building plans.
Building St Barbara's Church
The very first stone of the church was laid on September 28, 1930. This important event was done by Sir Alfred Herbert. He was a well-known businessman from the area.
The church was officially opened and blessed on September 26, 1931. This special ceremony is called a consecration.
Why the Church is Not Finished
Even though the church was opened, it was never fully completed. This was because there wasn't enough money to finish all the plans.
Some parts that were planned but never built include:
- The western 2½ bays (sections of the church)
- Two porches (covered entrances)
- A baptistry (a place for baptisms)
- A bell turret (a small tower for bells)
The total cost to build the church was £17,644. Sir Alfred Herbert gave £975 of this money. He donated it to build the Lady Chapel. This chapel was built to remember his second wife, Florence, who passed away in 1930.
