St Bede's Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It is designed in the Gothic Revival style, which means it looks like older churches from the Gothic period. History of St Bede's Church
How the Church Started
The land for St Bede's Church was a gift from a local person named Benjamin Badger. He gave the land to the Catholic community in Rotherham. Even though he was part of the Church of England, he wanted to help. He said he would give the land if the church built there was a nice building. This generous gift helped the church begin.
Building the Church
The first stone for the church was laid on July 29, 1841. The church was designed by two architects, Matthew Ellison Hadfield and John Grey Weightman. They also designed other churches, like St Bede's Church in Widnes. The church officially opened on October 5, 1842. It was dedicated by John Briggs, who was an important church leader at the time. Later, in the 1930s, a special area for the choir was added to the church.
The Parish of St Bede's
A "parish" is like a local church community. St Bede's Church is part of a larger parish that also includes Forty Martyrs Church in Kimberworth, Rotherham.
