The Church of St John is a historic parish church in the Maindee area of Newport, Wales. It is part of the Church in Wales. The church was built during the Victorian era, a period in the 1800s when Queen Victoria ruled. It serves the local community in Maindee.

History of the Church

The story of St John's Church has many interesting parts, from its construction in the 19th century to the challenges it faced in the 20th century.

Building a New Church

The main part of the church was built between 1859 and 1860. The architects were a team from Llandaff named Prichard and Seddon. They designed it in a style called Gothic Revival, which was popular at the time. This style copied the look of grand medieval cathedrals with pointed arches and tall windows.

It took many years for the church to be fully finished. The impressive tower, a key feature of the building, was not completed until 1911. A different architect, John Coates Carter, was in charge of finishing the tower.

Facing Difficult Times

The church went through some very hard times during the 20th century. In 1941, during World War II, the building was badly damaged by a bomb.

More trouble came a few years later. On November 11, 1949, someone deliberately set a fire inside the church. This caused a lot of damage to the interior.

Rebuilding and Reopening

After these difficult events, the community worked hard to repair their church. The inside of St John's was rebuilt between 1951 and 1952.

The church was officially reopened on September 18, 1952, in a special service led by the Bishop of Monmouth. Today, it continues to stand as an important building in Maindee.
