Church History

Building the Church

The Church of St John was built a long time ago. Construction started in 1859 and finished in 1860. Two architects, Prichard and Seddon, designed the main building. They were from Llandaff.

The church has a tall tower. This tower was added later. It was completed in 1911. Another architect, John Coates Carter, was responsible for finishing the tower.

Challenges and Rebuilding

The church faced some tough times. In 1941, during a war, the church was badly damaged. It was hit by bombs. This caused a lot of destruction to the building.

Later, in 1949, there was another incident. The church interior was damaged by fire. After these events, the church needed a lot of repair work.

The inside of the church was rebuilt. This reconstruction took place between 1951 and 1952. It was a big project to restore the church. The Bishop of Monmouth officially reopened the church on September 18, 1952.
