History of the Church

How Old is St John's?

St John the Evangelist's Church is incredibly old! It was first built in the 7th century. This makes it one of the very first churches ever built in Nottinghamshire. Imagine, it has been standing for over 1,300 years!

Norman Architecture

Many parts of the church show a style called "Norman." This style was popular after the Normans came to England in 1066. The church's tower, which is the tall part, was built in the early Norman period. The arches inside the church, especially in the tower and the chancel (the area near the altar), are also Norman.

The church has a special stone basin called a font, which is used for baptisms. This font is also from the Norman period. You can also see a beautiful carving made of alabaster, a soft white stone, which dates back to the 15th century.

Church Community

St John's Church works together with two other churches: St Luke's Church, Langold and St Mark's Church, Oldcotes. Together, they form a "joint parish." A parish is like a local church community area. All these churches are part of the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, which is a larger church region.

The Church Clock

For more than 20 years, the old clock at St John's Church did not work. But in 1851, a new clock was put in! It was a gift from a person named Robert Ramsden Esq. The clock was built by a company called Whitehurst of Derby.

This new clock had two round faces made of painted metal. It also had a pendulum, which is a swinging weight that helps keep time. The pendulum weighed about 140 pounds (63 kg). The clock also had a "driving weight" that made it work, and this weight was very heavy, about 588 pounds (267 kg)!
