St Eleutherius, St Anthia and St Luke the Evangelist

The church of St Eleutherius, St Anthia and St Luke the Evangelist is a special place of worship in Leyton, north London. It is a Greek Orthodox church, which means it follows the traditions of Christianity that began in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. This church is also known as the Greek Orthodox Community of St. Eleftherios and St. Luke.

About the Church

This church was started in 1982. In March 1984, it found its home at 113 Ruckholt Road. This building was not always a Greek Orthodox church. It used to be a Church of England building, which is the main Christian church in England.

Who are Saints Eleutherius, Anthia, and Luke?

The church is named after three important figures: Saints Eleutherius and Anthia and Saint Luke. Saints are people who are considered very holy in Christian faiths. Saint Luke was one of the writers of the Bible.

History of the Building

The building where the Greek Orthodox church is now was originally called St Luke's Church. It was built by the Church of England.

From Mission Church to Parish Church

St Luke's Church first opened as a "mission church." This means it was a smaller church set up to serve people in areas far from the main church. It helped people in the western parts of the Holy Trinity Church and St Catherine's Church areas in Leyton.

The first building was a simple iron hall. In 1914, a stronger, permanent church made of grey terracotta was built. Later, in 1932, this church got its own "parish." A parish is like a local area that a church is responsible for. This new parish was created from parts of the Holy Trinity and St Mary's parishes.

Surviving the London Blitz

During World War II, London faced many air raids, known as the London Blitz. The church building was badly damaged during these attacks. However, it was repaired and continued to be a place of worship.
