St Mark's Church, Derby, is a special parish church located in Chaddesden, Derbyshire, England. It is part of the Church of England. This church has an interesting history and a unique design.

History of St Mark's Church

Early Beginnings: A Temporary Church

Before the main church was built, a smaller, temporary church was put up in 1897. This early church was made of corrugated iron. It stood at the corner of Francis Street and St Mark's Road in Derby.

Building the Permanent Church

The first stone for the permanent St Mark's Church was laid on January 5, 1935. A woman named Edith Haslam from Breadsall Priory helped with this important step. The company that built the church was J.K. Ford and Weston. They were based on Osmaston Road in Derby.

The church cost about £11,000 to build back then. This was a lot of money in 1935! The church officially opened its doors on December 18, 1935.

Unique Church Design

St Mark's Church has a very interesting design. It is built in a style called "ambulatory." This means it has a walkway around the main area. The building's main structure uses eight parabolic arches. These arches are curved, like a rainbow.

These arches are connected by strong concrete beams. These beams are at the ground level, the walkway level, and the roof level. Together, they form the main "skeleton" of the church building.

Joining Parishes

Today, St Mark's Church shares a parish with another church. It is in a joint parish with St Philip's Church, which is also in Chaddesden. This means they work together to serve their local community.

The Church Organ

A Historic Pipe Organ

St Mark's Church has a beautiful pipe organ. It was made by a company called Kingsgate Davidson in 1935. This organ is a special part of the church's history. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
