A Look Back in Time
How the Church Started
Around the 1820s, a group of Christians called the Bible Christians came to St Martin's, Isles of Scilly. They were a type of Methodist church. In 1821, they built a simple chapel with a thatched roof.
Building a New Church
This first chapel was replaced in 1836 by the church building you see today. Later, in 1876, the inside of the chapel was updated with new seats. In 1881, a hall for Sunday School was added.
Joining Together
In 1907, the Bible Christian Church in England joined with other Methodist groups. These were the United Methodist Free Churches and the Methodist New Connexion. Together, they formed the United Methodist Church.
Today, this church is part of the Isles of Scilly Methodist Circuit. This is a group of Methodist churches in the area that work together.
