Building the Cathedral
The cathedral was designed by an architect named Alexander Ellis. It first opened its doors in the year 1860. Later, in 1876–77, a tall spire and new bells were added. This was done by another architect, Robert Gordon Wilson. These additions marked the church becoming a cathedral.
The large organ inside the cathedral was built in 1887. It was made by a company called James Conacher from Huddersfield. In 1960, the cathedral was rededicated. This happened after some changes were made to the inside of the church. These changes were part of bigger updates in the Catholic Church.
Beautiful Stained Glass
The cathedral has special windows made of coloured glass. One of these windows was created in 1978. It is dedicated to St John Ogilvie, a Scottish saint. This beautiful window was designed by an artist named David Gulland.
Important Monuments
Inside the church, you can find monuments that remember four important Scottish bishops. These bishops were George Hay, James Kyle, John MacDonald, and Colin Grant. Bishop John MacDonald and Bishop Colin Grant are also buried right there in the cathedral. Another person buried there is William Stopani.
Church Services
St Mary's Cathedral holds church services every day. Besides the regular services, there are also special masses. A Polish mass is held every week. Once a month, there is also a Spanish mass for people who speak Spanish.
