St Mary's Church, also known as St Marie's Church, is a Roman Catholic Parish church in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. It was built a long time ago, between 1836 and 1839. You can find it on the corner of Gibbet Street and Clarence Street, right next to Burdock Way. This church is special because it was the very first Roman Catholic church built in Halifax after the Reformation period.

The Story of St Mary's Church
Building the First Church
The idea to build St Mary's Church started in 1831. People began raising money to make it happen. The first stone was placed on September 20, 1836. The church officially opened its doors on November 27, 1839. However, on October 18, 1863, a big storm hit and caused part of the church to fall down.
Rebuilding and Improving
After the storm, everyone decided to fix and make the church bigger. A new foundation stone was laid on October 8, 1864. An architect named Ralph Nicholson led the repair work. This included rebuilding the roof, the arched walkways inside, and some of the walls. They also added a tower. All these repairs cost about £2,000. The work was finished by November 11, 1865.
Making the Church Even Bigger
In 1923, work started again to make the church even larger. Architect Clement Williams designed this new extension. The church could now hold 900 people, up from 380. This big project cost around £11,000. The newly extended church reopened on November 9, 1924. However, some work continued until 1926.
Church Community
St Mary's Church is part of a larger church community, or parish. Another church in this parish is St Alban's Church. Clement Williams, the same architect who extended St Mary's, also designed St Alban's. St Alban's Church was built between 1953 and 1954, and it was updated in 1970.
St Mary's Church holds two Sunday Masses. One is at 11:00 AM, and another is in Polish at 12:45 PM. St Alban's Church also has two Sunday Masses, at 9:30 AM and 6:00 PM.
