St Mary's Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Harborne, Birmingham. It's located on Vivian Road, right next to St Mary's Primary School. The Passionists, a religious group, started the church in 1875. Today, the Augustinians, another religious order, look after it.

A Look Back in Time

How St Mary's Began

Before the current church was built, the first group of worshippers met in an old Methodist Chapel. This was on Harborne High Street, starting in 1870. The Passionists, a religious order, helped form this first group.

Building the Church

Work on the St Mary's Church you see today began on 8 September 1875. It took a couple of years to build. The church officially opened its doors on 6 February 1877.

Expanding the Community

Over time, the old house behind the church, called Harborne Lodge, became too small. It wasn't big enough for the religious community living there. So, they decided to build a new "Retreat." This new building connected the original house with the church. In May 1911, the new building was blessed and opened. The Bishop of Birmingham, Edward Ilsley, led the special ceremony.
