St Mary's Church is a special Roman Catholic church located in Harborne, a part of Birmingham. You can find it on Vivian Road, right next to St Mary's Primary School. This church was first started by a group called the Passionists in 1875. Today, another religious group, the Augustinians, helps to run the church.

History of St Mary's Church

Early Beginnings in Harborne

The first group of people who worshipped at St Mary's was formed by the Passionists. They began meeting in 1870. Their first place of worship was an old Methodist Chapel on Harborne High Street that was no longer in use.

Building the Current Church

Work on the church you see today, located on Vivian Road, began on 8 September 1875. It took a little over a year to build. The church officially opened its doors on 6 February 1877.

Expanding the Community Space

For a long time, the old house behind the church, called Harborne Lodge, was too small. It was not very convenient for the religious community living there. So, a new building was planned. This new building, called a "Retreat," connected the original house with the church. In May 1911, the new building was officially blessed and opened. This special ceremony was led by Edward Ilsley, who was the Bishop of Birmingham at that time.
