St Mary's Church, Holyhead is a Roman Catholic church located in Holyhead, a town on the Isle of Anglesey in north Wales. It is also known as St. Mary Help Of Christians RC Church, Holyhead. This church is part of the Diocese of Wrexham. The church officially opened its doors on February 28, 1965.

The Story of St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church is found between Market Street and Longford Road in Holyhead. Holyhead is a main port in Anglesey, north Wales. The church was built to replace an older Roman Catholic church. The first St Mary's Church was built in 1860. However, it could only hold 150 people.

Why a New Church Was Needed

By the 1960s, the old church had about 1,000 members. It was too small for everyone. So, a new, bigger church was needed. The new church cost £50,000 to build. It was much larger and could seat 880 people. This new building opened in 1965.

Church Design and Features

A book about buildings in north Wales describes St Mary's. It calls the church "a large formal square church." The authors also pointed out its unique copper roof. The church is built on a raised platform. This makes it stand out.

Church Community and Services

St Mary's Church is part of the Caernarfon Deanery. This deanery is within the Diocese of Wrexham. As of 2013, the parish priest was Father Frank Murray. He is from the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The Holyhead parish also includes St Therese's Church in Rhosneigr.

The church holds regular services for its community. On Sunday mornings, there is a Mass at 11 am. A vigil Mass is also held on Saturday evenings. Mass is celebrated every weekday morning. Morning Prayer happens before the weekday Mass.

St Mary's Catholic Primary School

Right next to St Mary's Church is St Mary's Catholic Primary School. This school is connected to the church. It is an important part of the church community. The school and church work together closely.
