About St Mary's Church
St Mary's Church is found in Holyhead, which is a main port in north Wales. It sits between Market Street and Longford Road. The church was built to replace an older Catholic church. That first church was built in 1860. However, it could only fit 150 people.
A Bigger Church for More People
By the 1960s, the old church had about 1,000 members. This meant it was too small for everyone. So, a new church was needed. The new St Mary's Church cost £50,000 to build. It was much bigger and could seat 880 people. It officially opened in 1965.
Church Design and Features
Experts who wrote about buildings in north Wales described St Mary's. They called it "a large formal square church". They also noticed its special copper roof. The church is built on a raised platform, making it stand out.
Updates and Community Links
In 1992, the church added an extension. This new part included a church hall. It also added a library for people to use. These additions helped the church serve its community even better.
Church Community and Services
St Mary's Church is part of the Caernarfon Deanery. This is a group of churches within the Diocese of Wrexham. As of 2013, the main priest was Father Frank Murray. He is part of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate.
Other Churches in the Parish
The Holyhead church parish also includes another church. This is St Therese's Church, located in Rhosneigr. This means the priests serve both communities.
Regular Church Services
In 2013, the church had regular services. On Sunday mornings, Mass was held at 11am. There was also a special Mass on Saturday evening. Every weekday morning, Mass was held after Morning Prayer.
St Mary's Catholic Primary School
Right next to St Mary's Church is St Mary's Catholic Primary School. This school is closely connected to the church. It is part of the same parish. The church and school work together. They help support the children's education and faith.
