St Maurice's Church is a very old and important church. It is located in Horkstow, a village in North Lincolnshire, England. This church belongs to the Church of England. It is so special that it's officially protected as a Grade I Listed building. This means it is one of the most important historic buildings in the country.

History of St Maurice's Church

The oldest parts of St Maurice's Church are from the 13th century. This includes the tall tower and the main part of the church where people sit, called the nave. Also from this time are the rows of arches (arcades) and the chancel. The chancel is the area near the altar. The north aisle, which is a side section, also dates back to the 1200s.

Changes Over the Centuries

Later, in the 14th and 15th centuries, more parts were added. These include the south aisle and the clerestory. A clerestory is a high section of wall with windows. These windows let light into the church.

Over the years, the church needed many repairs. People worked to fix and rebuild parts of it from the 17th to the 19th centuries. In 1868, the inside of the church was restored. This work cost about £450 at the time. It also included putting in new seats for everyone. Later, in 1895, the outside of the church was also repaired and restored.

Important Memorials

Inside the church, you can find several special memorials. One is an oval marble tablet for Catherine Ayers. It dates back to 1759. At the front of the nave, there is a memorial for Rear Admiral Thomas Shirley. He was a leader of an important expedition to the Gold Coast. This memorial is from 1814. There is also a tablet for Colonel John Tufnell, which is dated 1838. These memorials help us remember people who were important to the church or the local area.
