The First Church Building
The original St. Michael and All Angels church was built in Bartley Green. It started as a smaller church connected to St. Laurence, Northfield. Building began in 1838 and the church was officially opened in 1840. The architect who designed it was Isaac Newry.
Design and Changes
The first church was a small, L-shaped building. It was designed in the Gothic style, which means it had features like pointed arches. In 1878, the church was made bigger. They added a special area called a sanctuary and a chancel. Later, in 1933, it became connected to St. Gabriel's Church in Weoley Castle.
Becoming a Parish
Over time, the church grew more important to the area. In 1950, a special district was linked to St. Michael's. This district officially became its own parish in 1966. Sadly, the first church building was taken down in 1968. It had been empty for about two years before that.
Building the New Church
A brand new church building was started in 1964. This new church was officially opened on July 12, 1966. It was designed by an architect named H. Norman Haines from London. The new church is located on Romsley Road.
Location and Community
The new church was built right across from the Bartley Green Shopping Centre. The land for the church was given by the Birmingham Corporation in 1964. In 1977, another church center, St. Francis Church Centre, was built nearby. Both of these churches are part of the Diocese of Birmingham.
