The Award and Its History

The winner of the St Mungo Prize receives a shiny gold medal and £1,000. This money comes from a special fund of £13,500. This fund was set up in 1936 by someone who wanted to remain a secret. Later, in 1949, after he passed away, it was revealed that Alexander Patterson Somerville was the generous donor. He was a shoe maker and artist from Glasgow.
