Norman Somerville Macfarlane, Baron Macfarlane of Bearsden (born March 5, 1926 – died November 5, 2021) was an important Scottish businessman. He was also a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament. He represented the Conservative Party.

About Norman Macfarlane
Norman Macfarlane went to the High School of Glasgow. Later, he became an officer in the Royal Artillery, a part of the British Army. He served during a time called the Palestine Emergency.
His Work and Public Service
Norman Macfarlane was involved in many important groups. From 1975 to 1981, he was on the Council of the Confederation of British Industry in Scotland. This group helps businesses in the UK.
He also served on the Board of the Scottish Development Agency from 1979 to 1987. This agency worked to improve Scotland's economy. From 1980 to 1982, he was part of the Royal Fine Art Commission for Scotland. This commission advised on art and architecture.
Honours and Titles
Norman Macfarlane received several special honours for his work.
- In 1983, he was made a Knight Bachelor. This means he could use the title "Sir."
- He was also a Deputy Lieutenant, which is a special role helping the King or Queen's representative in a county.
- In 1991, he became a life peer. This meant he was given the title Baron Macfarlane of Bearsden. This title allowed him to be a member of the House of Lords for the rest of his life. He joined the House of Lords on July 29, 1991, as a member of the Conservative Party.
- In 1996, he received an even higher honour. He was made a Knight of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle. This is a very old and respected Scottish honour.
Lord Macfarlane retired from the House of Lords on July 21, 2016.
Other Roles and Interests
Norman Macfarlane had other important roles too. He was the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1992, 1993, and 1997. This is a special role where he represented the monarch at the Church of Scotland's main meeting.
He was a member of the Glasgow Art Club since 1969, showing his interest in art. In 1991, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a group of experts in science and learning. He was also an Honorary Patron of Queen's Park Football Club, a Scottish football team.
His Death
Norman Macfarlane passed away on November 5, 2021. He was 95 years old.
