History of St Oswald's Church
How the Church Started
The church community began in 1847. It was started by Reverend William Scot Wilson. At that time, he was a priest at Holy Trinity Church in Ayr. He wanted to create a place of worship for English and Irish weavers living in the Maybole area.
In the beginning, there was no special church building. The group met in a room on Abbot Street. Priests from Girvan would come to lead their services.
Building the Church
Years later, in 1883, Bishop Wilson agreed to build a permanent church. He had become the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway by then. St Oswald's Church was finished in the same year. Bishop Wilson officially opened it on December 18, 1883.
The Church Organ
St Oswald's Church has a special pipe organ. It is one of the few remaining pipe organs in Maybole. This organ was made in 1893 by a company called Alfred Kirkland.
