A Look Back at St Oswald's History
How the Church Started
St Oswald's Church began in 1847. It was started by a church leader named Rev. William Scot Wilson. He was the leader of another church in Ayr at the time.
The church was created to help English and Irish people living in the area. Many of them worked as weavers. At first, there was no church building. The people met in a room on Abbot Street. Church leaders from Girvan helped them.
Building the Church
Years later, in 1883, Rev. Wilson decided it was time for a real church building. By then, he had become a Bishop. A Bishop is a senior leader in the church.
St Oswald's Church was finished in 1883. Bishop Wilson officially opened it on December 18, 1883.
The Church's Pipe Organ
Inside St Oswald's Church, there is a special musical instrument. It is a large pipe organ. This organ was made in 1893 by a company called Alfred Kirkland. It is one of the few pipe organs left in Maybole.
