History of St Patrick's Church
How the Church Started
The church began in 1924 as a temporary building called the Church of the Ascension. This first building was later changed into a hall for the community in 1940.
Building the Permanent Church
A new, permanent church was built to replace the temporary one. This new church was dedicated to Saint Patrick, a very famous saint. It was designed in a style called Moderne, which was popular for its clean lines and simple shapes. The architect who designed it was A. E. Wiseman.
Forming the Parish
In 1939, a new church area, called a parish, was created for St Patrick's Church. This new parish was formed by taking a section from the area of another church, St Margaret's.
Joining with Other Churches
Later, in 1959, another church called Christ Church, Barking became part of St Patrick's parish. It served as a "chapel of ease," which means it was a smaller church that helped serve the community in that area. For many years, St Patrick's, Christ Church, and St Margaret's worked together as one big church team. However, on January 1, 2017, St Patrick's Church became its own independent parish again.
