History of St Patrick's Church
The story of St Patrick's Church began in 1924. At first, it was a temporary church called the Church of the Ascension. This first building was used for worship until a new, permanent church was ready.
Building the Permanent Church
In 1940, the new, permanent church was finished. This church was built with brown bricks and was designed in a style called Moderne. The architect who designed it was A. E. Wiseman. The new church was dedicated to Saint Patrick, a very famous saint. After the new church was built, the old temporary building became a parish hall. A parish hall is a building used for community events and meetings by the church.
How the Parish Was Formed
A "parish" is an area that a church serves. In 1939, a new parish was created for St Patrick's Church. This new area was made by taking a part of the area that used to belong to St Margaret's Church.
Joining with Other Churches
Later, in 1959, another church called Christ Church, Barking, joined with St Patrick's. Christ Church became a "chapel of ease" for St Patrick's. A chapel of ease is a smaller church that helps serve people in a large parish, making it easier for them to attend services closer to home. For a while, St Patrick's, Christ Church, and St Margaret's churches all worked together as one big team parish. However, on January 1, 2017, St Patrick's Church became its own independent parish again.
