History of St Paul's Church

How the Church Started

The land for St Paul's Church was given by the Duchy of Lancaster. This is a large estate owned by the King or Queen of England. Albert Kingwell helped arrange for this land. He was also the architect who designed the church building.

A special rule was that a church had to be built within three years. Mr. Kingwell also gave a beautiful stained-glass window to the church.

Early Years and Name Change

The church first opened its doors in 1911. Back then, it was known as the "Church Room." It was connected to another church called Christ Church, Cockfosters.

It wasn't until 1936 that the building officially became known as St Paul's Church. The church continued to grow and serve its community.

Becoming Independent

For many years, St Paul's Church was linked to Christ Church. However, in the year 2000, St Paul's Church became fully independent. This meant it could manage its own affairs.

Services and Beliefs

Today, St Paul's Church holds services every Sunday. It follows a specific set of beliefs within the Church of England. This is known as the Conservative Evangelical tradition.

This tradition means the church holds strong beliefs about the Bible. It also supports traditional roles for men and women in the church. For example, it has decided not to have women as ordained priests.

Church Leadership

St Paul's Church receives special guidance from a bishop. This is called "alternative episcopal oversight." Currently, this guidance comes from the Bishop of Maidstone, who is Rod Thomas.
