History of Christ Church
How the Church Started
The church was started by Robert Cooper Lee Bevan. His family also helped create Barclays Bank. The biggest monument in the church's graveyard belongs to the Bevan family.
The church building was designed by an architect named Henry Edward Kendall. It was officially opened and blessed by Bishop Blomfield on April 9, 1839.
Changes Over the Years
In 1898, the church building was updated and redesigned by Sir Arthur Blomfield. Later, special tubular bells were added. These bells were put in place to remember students from Heddon Court School who died during the First World War.
Sister Church in Hadley Wood
St Paul's Church, Hadley Wood opened in 1911. It began as a branch of Christ Church. However, in 2000, St Paul's Church became its own independent church.
