St Peter's Church is a very old church located in Winterborne Came, a village in Dorset, England. It was built a long time ago, in the 14th century (which means the 1300s!).

This church is super important! It's officially listed as a Grade I listed building on the National Heritage List for England. This means it's one of the most important historic buildings in the country. Today, it's looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust. This group helps to save and care for old churches that are no longer used for regular services. St Peter's Church became part of their care on March 1, 1989.

A Look Inside the Church

The main part of the church, called the nave (where people sit), was built in the 14th century. The area near the altar, known as the chancel, was rebuilt in the 15th century. Later in the 15th century, a tall tower was added to the west side of the church. At the same time, new windows were put into the nave.

Inside the church, you can see some cool old features:

  • A special stone basin called a font. This one is from the 14th century and has eight sides. It was used for baptisms.
  • An oak pulpit from 1624. This is a raised platform where the minister would stand to give sermons.

William Barnes: The Poet Minister

From 1862 to 1886, a famous English writer and poet named William Barnes was the minister (or rector) of St Peter's Church. He was also a philologist, which means he studied language and words.

William Barnes is buried right in the churchyard. His grave is marked by a special stone called a Celtic cross. On the base of the cross, there's an inscription that says: 'In Memory of William Barnes, Died 7 October 1886. Aged 86 Years. For 24 Years Rector of this Parish. This Memorial was raised to his Memory by his Children and Grandchildren." This shows how much his family loved and remembered him.
