St Peter's Church is a very old and special church located in a village called Winterborne Came in Dorset, England. It was built a long, long time ago in the 14th century. Today, it is looked after by a group called the Churches Conservation Trust. This trust helps to save important old churches like St Peter's so people can still visit and learn about them.

What is St Peter's Church?

St Peter's Church is considered a Grade I listed building. This means it is a really important historical building in England. It has special protection because of its age and unique design. The church is no longer used for regular services, but it is kept safe and open for visitors. It became part of the Churches Conservation Trust on March 1, 1989.

A Look Inside the Church

The oldest part of the church, called the nave (which is the main area where people sit), was built in the 1300s. Later, in the 1400s, the chancel (the part near the altar) was rebuilt. A tall tower was added to the west side of the church later in the 1400s. At the same time, new windows were put into the nave.

Inside, you can see an interesting font from the 14th century. A font is a large basin used for baptisms. This one has eight sides. There is also an old wooden pulpit from 1624. A pulpit is a raised stand where a minister gives sermons.

The Famous Rector: William Barnes

From 1862 to 1886, a famous English writer and poet named William Barnes was the minister, or rector, of St Peter's Church. He was also a philologist, which means he studied languages and words.

William Barnes is buried in the churchyard, which is the area around the church. His grave is marked by a special stone called a Celtic cross. On the base of the cross, there is an inscription that says: 'In Memory of William Barnes, Died 7 October 1886. Aged 86 Years. For 24 Years Rector of this Parish. This Memorial was raised to his Memory by his Children and Grandchildren."
