How the Church Started
In 1899, a group called the London Diocesan Home Mission set up a church area. At first, they used a temporary church made of iron. This "iron church" was located on Philip Lane.
Building the Permanent Church
A new, permanent church was started in 1906. It was named St Philip the Apostle Church. This new building was built on the corner of Clonmell Road and Philip Lane. In 1907, a new church district was officially created. This district combined parts of two other parishes: Holy Trinity and Christ Church. The Bishop of London became the main supporter of the church.
Church Design and Features
The new St Philip the Apostle Church was designed by J. P. Cutts. It was built using red bricks and decorated with stone. The church was designed in the Perpendicular style, which is a type of Gothic architecture.
Inside the Church
The church has a main area called an aisled nave. It also has a chancel, which is the part of the church where the altar is. The chancel was finished in 1911. There is also a small south-east chapel. The church was designed to hold up to 800 people.
Special Parts of the Church
There were plans to build a tall tower on the north-west side of the church. However, only the first part of this tower was ever built. The church's organ, which is a large musical instrument, came from another church called St. Philip, Clerkenwell. Next to the church, a hall made of yellow bricks was built. This hall is located near Spur Road.
