Building St Stephen's Church
The church was designed by an architect named James Wilson. Building started in 1840 and finished in 1845. It was made from Bath Stone, a type of limestone. This stone came from the Limpley Stoke mine. The church cost about £6,000 to build.
Early Days and Changes
Even though the church was finished in 1845, it wasn't officially opened until 1881. In 1866, a new part was added. This was a northeast aisle for the Royal School. It was likely designed by Wilson & Willcox.
Later, in 1882–1883, a very wide chancel was built. This part also included a vestry and an organ room. This addition cost £3,000. W. J. Willcox designed this new section. He also designed the painted ceiling in 1886.
Art and Features Inside
The Lady Chapel has a beautiful stained glass window. It was made in 1983 by local artist Mark Angus. This window celebrates 100 years since the church parish was formed. It shows St Stephen's journey from life to death. The window uses red flames and a blue background.
The church also has a special font for baptisms. It is made of marble and dates back to 1843. The ceiling in the transept and the reredos (a screen behind the altar) are from around 1900. These were designed by Sir T. G. Jackson.
Modern Updates
In 1993-1994, the crypt (an underground room) was changed. It became a community center. This work was done by Slade, Smith and Winrow. In 2007, the church tower was repaired. The church bells were also replaced. New lights were put outside the church.
St Stephen's Today
Today, St Stephen's Church is part of Inclusive Church. This group started in 2003. It believes that everyone should be welcome in the church. This includes people of all backgrounds, genders, and sexual orientations.
