St Trygarn's Church is a historic church located in Llandrygarn, on the island of Anglesey, in Wales. It belongs to the Church in Wales, which is a Christian church in Wales. This beautiful old building was constructed way back in the 13th century.

Today, St Trygarn's Church is recognized as a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important historical site that needs to be protected. It's also the only major historical building in the small area of Llandrygarn.

A Look Back: The Church's History

St Trygarn's Church is believed to have been built in the 1200s. The oldest part of the church is a doorway that was originally on the north side of the main hall (called the nave). It was later moved to the south wall of the chancel, which is the area near the altar.

During the Late Medieval period, which was a long time ago, the church got some updates. The roof over the chancel was built with a special design called a collar beam roof. New window frames were also added around this time.

Inside the church, you can find two special memorials from the 1700s. One is made of slate and remembers Owen and Elen Morris and some of their family members. The other is made of marble and honors Ellin and John Hughes and their family. Both of these memorials are placed on the inside south wall of the nave.

Changes Over Time

In the 1800s, St Trygarn's Church received more updates. New windows were put in, and most of the inside of the church was refitted with new furnishings.

In 1849, a writer named Samuel Lewis wrote about the church. He mentioned that St Trygarn's Church shared a priest with another nearby church, St Twrog's Church, Bodwrog. The priest lived in a house in Bodwrog that was built in 1838. This house belonged to Jesus College, Oxford, which also received the church's tithes (a type of payment).

The church was described in a publication called Archaeologia Cambrensis as a small church with one main aisle. It was about 40 feet long and 14 feet 6 inches wide. Even today, the church continues to serve its community. It holds services in both English and Welsh, making it welcoming to everyone.

Why It's Special: Listed Status

In 1971, St Trygarn's Church was officially given "Grade II-listed status." This special status means the building is important and needs to be preserved. It was recognized as "a rural Medieval church of the simple traditional type, characteristic of Anglesey." This means it's a great example of the kind of old churches you would typically find in the countryside of Anglesey.
