For most of its history, Stade Briochin played at amateur levels. These are lower divisions for non-professional teams. However, they played in the second professional league for three seasons. This was between 1993 and 1997. After that, the club faced big money problems. They had to close down and were moved down to the fifth level.

History of Stade Briochin
Early Years and Amateur Football
Until 1959, Stade Briochin played in the Ligue de Bretagne. This was a regional amateur league in Brittany. For five of the next ten years, they played in the Championnat de France Amateur. At that time, this was the top amateur football league.
The French football league system changed over time. Stade Briochin kept playing around this level. In 1988, they were moved down a division. They went from the Ligue de Bretagne Division Honneur (which was the fifth level) to the Ligue de Bretagne Division Supérieure Régionale.
Climbing to Professional Leagues
From the 1988–89 season, the club started to do very well. They won promotions in three out of four seasons. This means they moved up to a higher league three times. In the 1993–94 season, they finished 6th in Division 2. This is still their best finish ever.
Financial Troubles and Rebuilding
In the 1996–97 season, the club started to have money problems. They owed a lot of money. On March 24, 1997, a court ordered the club to close. They were removed from the professional football league.
The club started playing again in the Championnat de France Amateur 2 for the 1997–98 season. This was a lower amateur league. They moved down even further in 2008. They went to the Ligue de Bretagne Division Honneur (now the sixth level). In 2011, they moved down again to the Ligue de Bretagne Division Supérieure Élite (seventh level).
But the club worked hard to get back up. They earned promotions in 2012 and 2013. This brought them back to the CFA 2.
In the 2019–2020 season, they won promotion to the Championnat National. They were at the top of their Championnat National 2 group. The season ended early because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
