Club History
Early Years and Amateur Leagues
For many years, until 1959, Stade Briochin played in the Ligue de Bretagne. This was a regional amateur league in Brittany. For five of the next ten years, they played in the Championnat de France Amateur. At that time, this was the top amateur football league.
The French football league system changed over time. Stade Briochin continued to play at this level. However, in 1988, they were moved down a league. They went from the Ligue de Bretagne Division Honneur (which was like the fifth level) to a lower regional league.
Rise to Professional Football
Starting from the 1988–89 season, the club had great success. They won promotions in three out of four seasons. This meant they moved up to higher leagues very quickly.
In the 1993–94 season, they finished 6th in Division 2. This was a professional league. This 6th place finish is still their best result ever.
Facing Challenges and Rebuilding
During the 1996–97 season, the club started to have money problems. On March 24, 1997, a court ordered the club to close down. They were then moved out of the professional football league.
The club had to restart in the Championnat de France Amateur 2 for the 1997–98 season. They fell to even lower leagues in the following years. In 2008, they were in the Ligue de Bretagne Division Honneur (now the sixth level). By 2011, they were in the Ligue de Bretagne Division Supérieure Élite (the seventh level).
However, the club worked hard to climb back up. They earned promotions in 2012 and 2013. These successes brought them back to the CFA 2.
Recent Successes
In the 2019–2020 season, Stade Briochin won promotion to the Championnat National. They were at the top of their group in the Championnat National 2 when the season ended early. This happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The club had an amazing run in the 2024–25 Coupe de France. They beat three professional clubs in a row. First, they defeated Le Havre (1–0). Then, they won against Annecy after a penalty shootout (1–1, 4–3 on penalties). Next, they beat Nice (2–1). Their journey ended in the quarter-finals. They played at home against Paris Saint-Germain and lost 7-0.
