What is the History of Stafford Springs?

How Did Stafford Springs Get Its Name?

The area is named after Edward Stafford. He moved there in the late 1800s. Local Choctaw people told him about a special mineral spring. They believed the spring water had healing powers for sick or injured people.

When Did the Spring Become Popular?

On May 19, 1892, a company called the Stafford Mineral Springs and Hotel Company started in New Orleans. The next year, they built a factory to bottle the spring water. This special water was then sent all over the country.

The Stafford Springs Hotel opened its doors in 1899. People would visit the hotel to enjoy the spring.

What Happened to the Hotel and Springs?

In 1918, the owners sold the company. Fewer visitors came to the springs during the Great Depression. This was a time in the 1930s when many people lost their jobs and money.

Even so, the hotel kept opening every year from April to September. But in 1952, the Stafford Springs Hotel was torn down. For a short time after that, the area was used as a dude ranch, a place where visitors could experience a cowboy lifestyle.

What Else Happened in Stafford Springs?

The Mississippi Art Colony was located in Stafford Springs. This was a place where artists gathered. It was there from 1962 to 1970.

A post office also operated in Stafford Springs. It was open from 1919 until 1955.
