Stage6 facts for kids
Stage6 was a website where people could share videos. It was a lot like YouTube, letting users upload, watch, and share their video clips. What made Stage6 special was that it allowed for much better video quality. Users could also upload very large video files. Plus, it was easy for visitors to download videos directly from the site.
What Was Stage6?
Stage6 was an online community for sharing videos. Users could upload their own video clips. They could also watch videos in high quality. This was because the videos used special technology called DivX and Xvid.
The Story of Stage6
Stage6 was launched in 2006 by a company called DivX Inc. It started as a public test version, also known as a "beta." Like YouTube, it let registered users upload and stream videos.
By July 2007, DivX Inc. wanted Stage6 to become its own separate company. Jordan Greenhall, one of the founders, was going to lead this change. The plan was expected to be finished by the end of 2007. By January 2008, Stage6 was very popular, with over 10.7 million video views.
Why Stage6 Closed
Even though it was popular, Stage6 never fully launched out of its test phase. DivX Inc. found it hard to keep supporting the website. They announced on February 25, 2008, that Stage6 would close. They said they could not give it the attention and money it needed.
Stage6 stopped working on February 29, 2008, a day later than planned. When users visited the site, they were sent to a welcome page for another video site called Veoh. In June 2008, a technology website called CNET even called Stage6 one of the greatest websites that no longer exists.
