The Stancer Road–North Coldwater River Bridge is an old road bridge in Union Township, Michigan. It carries Stancer Road over the North Coldwater River. This bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. It is a great example of a special type of bridge called a pinned overhead Pratt truss bridge. These bridges used to be common in Michigan, but now they are quite rare.

Bridge History

When Was the Bridge Built?

The Massillon Bridge Company built this bridge. It was likely built in 1888. We don't have much information about how it was built.

How the Bridge Is Used Today

The bridge is still open for cars and trucks to drive on. However, it has a weight limit of three tons. This means only lighter vehicles can cross it. The bridge was repaired and updated in 2007 to keep it safe.

Bridge Design and Features

What Kind of Bridge Is It?

The Stancer Road Bridge is a Pratt through truss bridge. This means the main support structure, called a truss, goes above the road. It is 88 feet long and 14 feet wide.

How the Bridge Is Built

The bottom parts of the bridge, called abutments, are made of concrete. These parts hold up the ends of the bridge. The main frame of the bridge, the truss, is made of strong wrought iron.

Special Details

The bridge has a modern metal guard rail for safety. The road surface, or deck, is made of wood and sits on metal I-beams. You can see the number "88" in the middle of the bridge plates. This number probably tells us the year the bridge was built. There is also an old dam spillway located close to the bridge.
