Standard Shaft, Pennsylvania facts for kids
Standard Shaft is a small community found in Mount Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is located very close to the town of Mount Pleasant.
What is Standard Shaft?
The name Standard Shaft refers to a community that grew up around a coal mining operation. Local people sometimes just call it Shaft. This community began in 1886. It was started by the H. C. Frick Coke Company.
How Did the Mine Affect the Community?
Around 1932, another company, the H. C. Frick Coke Company, closed its Calumet Mine. This mine was in a nearby place called Calumet. When it closed, some miners were moved to the Standard Shaft Mine. However, many other coal miners lost their jobs. They were left without work or money to support themselves.
