What Does the Stanley-Woodruff-Allen House Look Like?
The Stanley-Woodruff-Allen House is in the western part of West Hartford. You can find it on the south side of Buena Vista Road. It's close to some town sports fields and the Buena Vista Golf Course. Tall trees hide the house a bit from the road.
How Old is This Historic House?
This house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with wooden boards called clapboards. The front of the house has three sections with windows placed evenly around the main door.
What Unique Features Does the House Have?
The front door has a small, enclosed porch with a shed roof. This porch is mostly made of glass. Inside, the house has been changed quite a bit to work as an art gallery. However, some original parts are still there. You can see the old window frames and one wall with its original wooden panels. A part of the house extends to the back with a shed roof. This gives the building a unique shape, often called a saltbox profile. This back part was added later.
Who Lived in the Stanley-Woodruff-Allen House?
The house was built around 1752 by a man named Samuel Stanley. He built it for his son, who was also named Samuel. This house was one of the first farmhouses in the area that later became West Hartford. It is now one of the very few buildings from the 1700s that are still standing.
How Did the House Become an Art Gallery?
The town of West Hartford bought the house in 1943. They used it as a home for the person who took care of the golf course. Later, in 1976, the house was given to the West Hartford Art League. They received it through a long-term lease. The Art League now uses the house as a gallery space. They even named it "the Saltbox" because of its unique shape!
