The Stanley-Woodruff-Allen House is a really old and special house located in West Hartford, Connecticut. It was built way back in 1752, making it one of the oldest buildings still standing in West Hartford! This historic house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Today, it's part of the West Hartford Art League, where it's used for art exhibits.

What the House Looks Like

The Stanley-Woodruff-Allen House is in the western part of West Hartford. You can find it on the south side of Buena Vista Road. It's near some of the town's sports fields and the Buena Vista Golf Course.

Outside the House

This house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof. There is a chimney in the middle of the roof. The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboards. The front of the house has three sections with windows. The main door is in the middle. A small, glass-enclosed porch covers the entrance.

Inside the House

The inside of the house has been changed quite a bit. This was done to make it work as an art gallery. However, some original parts are still there. You can still see the old window frames. One wall even has its original wooden panels. A part of the roof slopes down in the back. This gives the house a unique "saltbox" shape. This sloped part was added later.

A Look at the House's History

The house was built around 1752 by Samuel Stanley. He built it for his son, who was also named Samuel. This was one of the very first farmhouses in what we now call West Hartford. It is one of the few buildings from the 1700s that are still standing today.

From Farmhouse to Art Gallery

The town of West Hartford bought the house in 1943. They used it as a home for the person who took care of the golf course. Then, in 1976, the town gave the house to the West Hartford Art League. They gave it to them with a long-term lease. The Art League now uses the house as a special place to show art. They even call it "The Saltbox" because of its unique shape!
