Stanley Peak is a mountain located in South Georgia, a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean. It stands tall at 1,265 meters (about 4,150 feet) and is part of the Wilckens Peaks mountain range. This peak is found near the top of the Fortuna Glacier.
Why is it Called Stanley Peak?
This mountain was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC). They decided to honor Lieutenant Commander (later Commander) Ian Stanley. He was a helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy.
A Brave Rescue Mission
Commander Stanley became famous for a very brave rescue operation. On April 21, 1982, two helicopters crashed on Fortuna Glacier during bad weather. Commander Stanley, flying from HMS Antrim, successfully rescued the people involved. The peak was named after him to remember his courage.
