Stanley Wilson Jones CMG (born July 1, 1888 – died January 17, 1962) was an important British administrator. He worked for the British government in what was then called the Federated Malay States and Straits Settlements. These areas are now part of Malaysia and Singapore.

He started his career in 1911. Over time, he became the British Resident of Selangor. This was a top job in one of the Malay states. Later, he served as the Colonial Secretary of Straits Settlements. This made him a very senior official in Singapore.

Working in the Federated Malay States

Jones began his service in 1911. He joined the Malayan Civil Service as a "cadet." This was like an entry-level position for future leaders.

He worked in various places as an Assistant District Officer. These included Pekan and Lipis. During the First World War, he continued in similar roles. He later became a full District Officer in areas like Jelebu.

In 1924, he worked in Kuala Lumpur. This was the main office for the Federated Malay States. He took on special duties there.

He also served in Johore (now Johor). From 1931 to 1933, he was an acting Legal Adviser. He also acted as the General Adviser for Johore.

In 1935, he went to Kedah. He was the acting British Adviser there. After that, he worked for the Federal Government.

From 1937 to 1939, he held a very important role. He was the British Resident of Selangor. This meant he was the main British official in that state.

His Time in the Straits Settlements

In 1934, Jones moved to Singapore. Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements. He worked in the Land Office there.

In 1940, he became the new Colonial Secretary of Straits Settlements. This was a very high-ranking position. He took over from Sir Alexander Small.

In January 1942, a big change happened. He was sent back to the United Kingdom. This happened just before Singapore fell to the Japanese forces. Hugh Fraser took his place.

Awards and Recognition

Stanley Jones received an important award in 1939. He was given the Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG). This award recognizes people who have done great service.

Stanley Wilson Jones was born in 1888. He was the youngest son of David Jones from Manchester, England.

In 1919, he married Esther Olive Hartley. They had three children together. They had one son and two daughters.

He went to Hulme Grammar School in Manchester. He then studied at Manchester University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there.

In 1931, he became a barrister. This means he was qualified to be a lawyer. He joined the Middle Temple, a famous legal society. However, he never worked as a lawyer.

Stanley Jones passed away in 1962.
