Stanton Center is a special old building in Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It has two floors and a basement. This building was once a school, and it played a very important role in the community. It was even the first high school for African American students in Anne Arundel County. Today, it serves as a community center for everyone.

Stanton Center: A Historic Place
The Stanton Center building was finished in 1893. It was built with bricks and has a classic, grand style. This building was actually the second school to be built on this spot. For many years, it was an elementary school where young children learned.
A School for Everyone
Later, the Stanton Center became a very important high school. It was the first high school in Anne Arundel County specifically for African American students. This was a time when schools were often separated by race. Stanton Center provided a place for these students to get their education.
From School to Community Hub
The building continued to be used as a school until the 1960s. During this time, schools across the United States began to end segregation. This meant that students of all races could attend the same schools. After this change, the Stanton Center building became a community center. It is now a place where people can gather for activities and events.
Recognized for Its History
Because of its important history and its role in the community, Stanton Center was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This list recognizes buildings and places that are important to the history of the United States.
