The Starling Childs Camp is a special old house located on the south side of Doolittle Lake in Norfolk, Connecticut. It was built in 1923. This house is important because it was designed by a unique architect named Alfredo S.G. Taylor. The camp was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is a protected historic site because of its connection to the architect.

What Is the Starling Childs Camp?

The Starling Childs Camp is found at the southern end of Doolittle Lake. This lake area is a very private place where people have summer homes. A road called Deerfield Road helps people get to this camp and other private summer houses by the lake.

What Does the Main House Look Like?

The main house at the camp is a one-and-a-half story building. It is built on a strong stone foundation. The part of the house facing the lake has cool rounded arch openings at the bottom. One of these arches is where the main door is.

The top part of the house has a wide, pointed roof section called a gable. There is also a porch that goes across most of the front. This porch has a special fence-like railing called a balustrade. Stairs on the side of the house lead from the porch down to the ground.

Who Built the Camp and Why Is It Special?

The land where the Starling Childs Camp stands used to belong to the Benedict family. They were important farmers in the northern part of Norfolk. In the late 1800s, this area started to become a popular summer vacation spot. This happened after the railroad came to Norfolk in 1871. Doolittle Lake then became a place for fancy private summer homes.

The Childs camp was built in 1923. It was designed by Alfredo S.G. Taylor. He was an architect from New York City who spent his summers in Norfolk. Over time, he designed many buildings in the town. Taylor designed six camps on Doolittle Lake. All of them have a rustic, natural style, just like the Starling Childs Camp. Taylor also designed other buildings for the Childs family in Norfolk. These include the Sports Building and the Tom Thumb House.
