The Starling Grange, now known as Starling Hall, is an old building in Fayette, Maine. It is located at 2769 Main Street, which is also ME 17. This building was first built in 1879. It has been an important part of the community ever since.
A group called the Grange used to meet here. The local Grange chapter stopped meeting in 1987. After that, the town of Fayette took over the building. In 2016, the Starling Grange was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special place with a lot of history!
What Does Starling Hall Look Like?
Starling Hall is in a small group of buildings in North Fayette village. You can find it on the east side of Route 17. It is just south of where Baldwin Hill Road meets Route 17.
The building is long and shaped like a rectangle. It has two and a half stories. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboards. The building sits on a hill, so part of its basement can be seen. Long ago, the basement might have even been used for horses!
The front of the building looks the same on both sides. There is a small entrance room that sticks out. It has its own hip-shaped roof. On each side of this entrance, you will see windows with decorative covers. More windows are on the second floor.
Inside, the ground floor has a small meeting room. There is also a kitchen and a dining room. At the back, you will find a mudroom. Upstairs, there is a very large meeting hall. It has a raised stage, which is like a small platform for performances.
The History of Starling Grange Hall
The Starling Grange group started in 1877. The first part of the building we see today was built in 1879. Many people joined the Grange, so the hall needed to be bigger. In 1900, the building was made wider and deeper. You can still see how the old part of the building connects to the newer part.
For many years, the hall was a place for people to gather. It hosted social events and community meetings. In 1953, the building became home to the town library. The Grange chapter helped start this library.
The Grange group stopped meeting in 1987. The building was then given to the town of Fayette. It has been fixed up and is now cared for by a non-profit group. This group works for the town to keep the hall in good shape.
