Fayette is a small town located in Kennebec County, Maine, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,160 people lived there. Fayette is a popular place for fun outdoor activities in central Maine. It is part of the beautiful Winthrop Lakes Region.

Fayette's Early History
Fayette was first settled in 1781. Back then, it was known as Sterling Plantation. On February 28, 1795, it officially became a town. This process is called being "incorporated."
Some records say Sterling Plantation was settled even earlier, in 1779. It was on 7,000 acres of land. This land was given by the State of Massachusetts. One person, Asa Wiggin, is said to have cleared the very first land there in 1779.
The town of Fayette was named after the Marquis de Lafayette. He was a French nobleman. He helped the Americans during the Revolutionary War. The Kent Burying Ground, a historic cemetery, was built in Fayette in 1880.

Fayette covers an area of about 31.51 square miles (81.61 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 29.17 square miles (75.55 square kilometers). The rest, about 2.34 square miles (6.06 square kilometers), is water.
Fayette is special because it has nine lakes and ponds. These bodies of water are very popular for different kinds of recreation. People enjoy swimming, fishing, and boating there.

Education in Fayette
Fayette Central School is the main school in town. It serves students up to the 5th grade. Michael Cormier is the Superintendent of Schools for the district.
In 2014, Fayette Central School received an "A" grade. This was part of the Maine Department of Education's Report Cards. After finishing 5th grade, students from Fayette go to other school districts for middle and high school. They can attend schools in Spruce Mountain, Winthrop, or Maranacook.
