Station Square is a fun place to visit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It's a big area with shops, restaurants, and entertainment. You can find it in the South Shore neighborhood. It's right across the Monongahela River from downtown Pittsburgh.

This 52-acre (210,000 m2) complex used to be a historic train station area. It was part of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad. The old buildings, like the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad Station, are now important historical sites.

Station Square has 275,000 square feet (25,500 m2) of space for stores. There are almost 60 shops, places to eat, and fun things to do. You can even find Highmark Stadium and a big hotel there. Over three million people visit Station Square every year. It's a popular spot for both tourists and people who live in Pittsburgh.

The area is easy to get to. There's a stop for the "T" Pittsburgh Light Rail system nearby. You can also catch the Gateway Clipper Fleet boats from here. These boats offer fun river cruises. Station Square is managed by Brookfield Asset Management. In 1979, the whole complex was added to the list of important historical places.

Station Square was created by Arthur P. Ziegler, Jr.. He was a leader in saving old buildings and places in the United States. Mr. Ziegler was also the President of the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. This group is often called Landmarks.

How Station Square Was Built

Landmarks started developing Station Square in 1976. They wanted to reuse old buildings in a new way. This project helped them show how old places could be given new life. It was a great example of urban planning.

The Allegheny Foundation gave money to start the project in 1976. Landmarks took five old Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad buildings. They changed them for new uses. They also added a hotel, a dock for the Gateway Clipper Fleet, and parking lots.

Now, you can find shops, offices, restaurants, and entertainment here. It's a lively spot on the Monongahela River. It sits across from the Golden Triangle area.

Investment and Future

The project cost about $100 million in total. It was a smart investment for the city. In 1994, the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation sold Station Square. They sold it to Forest City Realty Trust. The money from the sale helped them continue their work. This included restoring other buildings and running educational programs.

Every year, the foundation teaches many people about Pittsburgh's history. They show how important it is to protect old buildings. Over 10,000 teachers, students, and visitors learn from them.
