A statue of Henry Irving stands in London. You can find it near the entrance of the National Portrait Gallery. This statue honors Henry Irving, a very famous British actor.
The statue was first shown to the public on December 5, 1910. Actors and other people involved in British theatre helped pay for it. They organized a special group called the Irving Memorial Committee. The land for the statue was given by the City of Westminster. Every year on February 6, the Irving Society holds a ceremony at the statue. They lay a wreath (a circle of flowers) to remember the actor's birthday. The statue is made of bronze and stands on a stone base. It was created by the sculptor Thomas Brock. The statue is also listed as Grade II, which means it is an important historical building or monument.
About the Statue's Location
The street next to the statue used to be called Green Street. In 1939, it was renamed Irving Street to honor the actor. This happened a year after his 100th birthday in 1838. In 1951, pretty gardens were built around the statue. These gardens had railings with the letters "HI" on them, which stood for Henry Irving. These gardens were opened by another famous actor, Laurence Olivier, during the Festival of Britain.
