About Stefon Harris
Stefon Harris grew up in Albany, New York. When he was younger, he planned to play classical music with the New York Philharmonic orchestra. But then he heard the music of Charlie Parker, a famous jazz saxophone player, and his plans changed! He decided to become a jazz musician instead.
In the 1990s, Stefon started playing music with other artists like Charlie Hunter and Steve Turre. He was a "session musician," which means he played on their recordings. Later, he signed with a record company called Blue Note. His first album, A Cloud of Red Dust, came out in 1998.
His second album, Black Action Figure, was nominated for a Grammy Award. This is a very important award in the music world! In 2001, he worked with pianist Jacky Terrasson and they recorded an album together called Kindred. Stefon's album The Grand Unification Theory (2003) also won a special award from Jazz at Lincoln Center.
In 2009, Stefon Harris was the main performer at a big music event in Orange County, California. In 2011, he worked with saxophonist David Sánchez and trumpeter Christian Scott on an album called Ninety Miles. They recorded this album in Havana, Cuba.
