After finishing her studies in the United States, Stella Kilonzo worked for about four and a half years. She helped regulate the stock market at a place called the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) in Chicago.

Then, she came back to Kenya. She worked at a well-known company called Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC). There, she was a Senior Associate, helping businesses with their money plans.

From 2008 to 2010, Stella was the leader of the East Africa Securities Regulatory Authorities (EASRA). This group helps make sure money markets in East Africa work well. While she was the CEO of the CMA in Kenya, she also helped oversee the Insurance Regulatory Authority. She was also part of the Retirement Benefits Authority of Kenya.

Before becoming the main CEO of the CMA, she was the Acting Chief Executive Officer from 2007 to 2008. After four years as the CEO, she chose not to stay for another term. She left her role on June 30, 2012. In December 2013, she started her current job as a manager at the African Development Bank (AfDB). She helps develop the financial sector there.
