The Sten Mk II was a very important submachine gun used by the British army during World War II. It was designed to be simple and quick to make, helping the British military in their fight.

Why Was the Sten Mk II Created?

At the start of World War II, the United States helped the British by lending them many weapons, including the Thompson submachine gun. However, making the Thompson gun was quite expensive and took a lot of time. Because of this, the British decided they needed their own submachine gun that could be made cheaply and quickly. That's how the Sten Mk II came to be!

How Was the Sten Mk II Designed?

The Sten Mk II was made from only 47 parts. This simple design meant it could be put together and taken apart very fast. This made it easy to transport and hide, which was a huge advantage during the war. Because it was so easy to handle, it became very popular with resistance fighters in different countries, like the Free French resistance.

Special Features of the Sten Mk II

The Sten Mk II was special because it was one of the first submachine guns to have a silencer made for it. A silencer makes a gun quieter, which was useful for stealth missions and surprise attacks.

Was the Sten Mk II Reliable?

Even though it was easy to make and hide, the Sten Mk II wasn't always the most reliable weapon. Sometimes it would jam, meaning it would stop firing. There were even times when it would fire all its bullets without anyone pulling the trigger!

Because of these issues, British soldiers who captured German MP-40 submachine guns often preferred to use the MP-40 instead of their Stens. Luckily, both the Sten and the MP-40 used the same type of bullet, called the 9x19mm Parabellum. This meant soldiers could use the enemy's ammunition to load their Stens, or vice versa, which was very helpful in battle.
