Stepfanie Kramer (born August 6, 1956) is an American actress, singer, and writer. She is most famous for playing the strong detective, Sgt. Dee Dee McCall. This role was in the popular NBC TV show Hunter.

Stepfanie has received many awards for her acting. She was nominated for an Emmy Award. She also won the Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actress Award. The First Americans in the Arts organization honored her in 1995, 2002, and 2003. In 1988, a TV Guide poll voted her one of the most beautiful women in TV history. Besides acting, Stepfanie Kramer has also written and directed for television. She is also a talented singer and songwriter.

Her Acting Journey

Stepfanie Kramer began her acting career in the late 1970s. She was still in school at that time. She appeared as a guest star in many TV shows. These included Starsky & Hutch, Dynasty, Bosom Buddies, and Knots Landing.

Stepfanie graduated from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts/West. She later returned there to teach as a guest instructor. In 1983, she starred in the NBC comedy show We Got It Made.

Becoming a Star in Hunter

Stepfanie's biggest acting opportunity came in 1984. She got a main role in the TV series Hunter. This show was created by Stephen J. Cannell. After a difficult start, Hunter became very popular around the world. It ran for seven seasons. Stepfanie starred in six of those seasons, appearing in 130 episodes. In an interview in 1989, Stepfanie shared that she did not expect the show to last so long.

Music and New Adventures

In 1986, Stepfanie Kramer mentioned she was working on a rock album. She was collaborating with composer Mike Post, who wrote music for Hunter. She hoped to release the album the next year, but it did not happen.

In 1990, Stepfanie announced she was leaving Hunter. The news often said she wanted to focus on her music. However, Stepfanie explained in a TV interview, "I was lucky to act, write, and direct on Hunter. Now it's time for me to move to the next part of my life."

Releasing Music and Performing

After leaving Hunter, Stepfanie started recording an album in England. She worked with producer Nils Lofgren. This album was also not released. In 1992, Stepfanie got married and moved to Colorado. Two years later, she had a daughter. After her divorce in 2001, she and her daughter moved back to Los Angeles.

Stepfanie continued to write music. She also starred in successful TV movies and independent films. She is a trained mezzo-soprano singer. She showed her singing skills in several Hunter episodes. She also performed on Bob Hope TV specials.

Her first album, One Dream, came out on October 12, 1999. It has ten adult contemporary songs. Most of these songs were written by Stepfanie herself. Her second album, The Great American Song Book, was released in early 2008. On this album, Stepfanie sings 14 classic songs. These were recorded live during her one-woman show. She performs this show in different places across the country. In 2008, she represented the U.S. at the International Music Festival in Queretero, Mexico. As a singer, she has performed all over the world.

Stepfanie Kramer was honored by "The First Americans in the Arts Awards." She won the award for Outstanding Performer as a lead actress in 1995, 2002, and 2003.

After leaving Hunter, she kept working as an actress. She appeared in several TV shows and movies. Some of her notable movie projects include Coins in the Fountain (1990), Twin Sisters (1992), Beyond Suspicion (1994), Deceived by Trust (1995), Abducted: A Father's Love (1996), Thrill (1996), The Dogwalker (1999), and The Cutting Edge: Going for the Gold (2006).

She also played her role as Dee Dee McCall again. This was in two Hunter TV movies in 2002 and 2003. Because these movies had high ratings, NBC tried to bring the TV show back. However, the 2003 revival was canceled after only nine episodes.

In 2015, Stepfanie Kramer was invited to the 55th Monte-Carlo Television Festival. There, she was honored as an "Icon of Television." She returned to the 56th Festival in 2016. She was a member of the Fiction Jury for the Festival. In 2025, she was invited to the 35th Shanghai Television Festival. She was honored for her work in Hunter, which was very popular in China.

Kramer has worked with writer/producer David Chisolm and writer/producer Chip Hayes. Together, they write feature films and television shows. Stepfanie has also completed a book reading for the musical A Twist of Fate in New York. She also helped produce a staged reading of a new musical in Los Angeles. It is called "Doc Holliday The Musical." She was also a special guest in the Los Angeles stage show Menopause The Musical. She has a podcast on YouTube called "Reflections with Stepfanie Kramer." It shares thoughts on weekly quotes. She is also making an interview podcast called "The Other Side" with Stepfanie Kramer.

Stepfanie's Family Life

Stepfanie Kramer married Mark Richards on May 24, 1992. They divorced in February 2001. They have a daughter named Lily Richards, who was born in 1994. Lily is also an actress, writer, and director. Stepfanie's official website states that her daughter is the greatest production she has ever been involved in.
