Stephanie Mingo is an activist who works to make sure everyone has fair housing. She especially helps people in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Stephanie was born in New Orleans and grew up in a public housing area called the St. Bernard development. She works for the Orleans Parish School Board and is a mother of four children. In 2009, she lived with her family in the Iberville housing development.
Growing Up in New Orleans
Stephanie Mingo's family had lived in the St. Bernard public housing development for three generations. This was a very large housing area in the city. After Hurricane Katrina, many people, including Stephanie and her family, had to leave their homes.
They were offered a new home in a place called Columbia Parc Development. This new development was being built where the St. Bernard homes used to be. However, Stephanie and her family decided not to take the offer.
Helping Her Community
In early 2009, Stephanie Mingo wrote an important paper with another activist named Sam Jackson. It was called "Comments On the Draft 'Policy Recommendations to Support Gulf Coast Housing Recovery'." In this paper, they shared their ideas about how to help people find affordable homes in the Gulf Coast region.
Stephanie and Sam believed that relying only on private companies to rebuild homes was not working well. Much of Stephanie's work focuses on showing how this approach did not help everyone.
Stephanie was also featured in a movie called Getting Back to Abnormal in 2013. This movie was about New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. In the film, Stephanie was shown working with other activists. They were fighting to make sure people could return to their homes in areas like the Lower Ninth Ward and were not forced out.
