Stephen Batman facts for kids
Stephen Batman (who sometimes spelled his name Stephan Bateman) was an English writer and translator who lived in the 1500s. He was known for his learning and for collecting many books. He passed away in 1584.
Batman's Life and Work
Stephen Batman was born in a town called Bruton, Somerset, in England. After going to school in his hometown, he went to Cambridge University. There, people knew him as a very smart person and a great speaker.
It is thought that in 1534, he earned a special degree called a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). At that time, he was also a priest and had been studying for six years.
Working with Archbishop Parker
Later, a very important church leader named Archbishop Parker chose Stephen Batman to be one of his personal assistants, called chaplains. Archbishop Parker asked Batman to help him build a huge library. This library is now kept at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Batman claimed he collected 6,700 books for the Archbishop, which was a massive number for that time!
Later Years and Death
In 1573, Batman became the rector (a type of church leader) of a church in Merstham, Surrey. He also earned another important degree, becoming a Doctor of Divinity. He was also the parson (another church leader) of Newington Butts in the same area.
In 1582, he worked as a chaplain for Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon, who was an important nobleman. Stephen Batman lived for some time in Leeds, Kent. He died in 1584.
