Meet the Characters
The show focuses on two main characters: Albert and Harold Steptoe. Albert, the father, is played by Wilfrid Brambell. He is an older man who is quite set in his ways. He often seems a bit messy and doesn't like change.
Harold, the son, is played by Harry H. Corbett. He is much younger and dreams of a better life. Harold wants to improve himself and escape their junk-filled home. However, his father, Albert, often makes fun of his plans. Albert also depends a lot on Harold, which makes it hard for Harold to leave.
How the Show Started
The idea for Steptoe and Son came from a TV show called Comedy Playhouse. In 1962, an episode of Comedy Playhouse featured these characters. The episode was very popular.
The writers, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, created all the episodes of Steptoe and Son. They also wrote two movies based on the TV series. These films were Stepson and Son (released in 1972) and its follow-up, Steptoe and Son Rides Again (released in 1973).
