Getting Started in Boxing
Steve Forbes discovered his passion for boxing at the young age of 10. He started training at the Matt Dishman Community Center in his hometown of Portland, Oregon.
Professional Career
In 1996, when he was nineteen, Forbes decided to become a professional boxer. He had an amazing start, winning his first fourteen fights in a row. His winning streak ended on March 11, 2000, in a match against former world champion Alejandro González.
After that loss, Forbes quickly got back on track. On September 17, 2000, he fought David Santos for the United States Boxing Association Super Featherweight title. Forbes won the fight and the title belt.
Becoming a World Champion
Forbes's hard work paid off. He got a chance to fight for the IBF (International Boxing Federation) super featherweight world title. The title was available because the champion, Diego Corrales, moved up to fight another boxing star, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
This gave Forbes the opportunity to face the #1 ranked fighter, John Brown, for the championship. On December 3, 2000, Forbes won the world title by defeating Brown. The referee stopped the fight in the 8th round, giving Forbes a victory by TKO, or technical knockout.
Forbes proved his win wasn't a fluke by beating Brown again in a rematch on September 29, 2001. However, in 2002, he lost the title because he couldn't meet the weight limit for a fight. He later fought Carlos Hernández for the same title in 2003 but lost the match.
Starring on The Contender
Forbes became a well-known TV personality when he joined the second season of the ESPN reality show, The Contender. Because he was a former world champion, many people thought he would win the whole competition.
On the show, Forbes was part of the Gold Team. He performed very well, winning his first three fights against Freddy Curiel, Nick Acevedo, and Cornelius Bundrage. He made it all the way to the final match but lost to Grady Brewer.
Fights After the Show
After The Contender, Forbes continued to face tough opponents.
- On October 6, 2007, he scored a big win against Francisco Bojado.
- On May 3, 2008, he had one of the biggest fights of his career against the legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya. Although Forbes fought hard for all 12 rounds, De La Hoya won the match.
- On September 27, 2008, he fought Andre Berto for the WBC welterweight title but was defeated.
Over his long career, Forbes fought a total of 50 times, winning 36 of those matches.
