Steve Lewis was a talented jazz pianist and composer. He was born in New Orleans on March 19, 1896. He became known for his unique way of playing the piano and his interesting personality.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Steve Lewis started his music career in 1910. He joined a group called the Silver Leaf Orchestra. This was his first step into the world of jazz music. Later, in 1917, he became a member of the famous Olympia Orchestra. He even went on tour with performers Bill and Mary Mack.

A Decade with Armand J. Piron

After his tour, Steve Lewis returned to his hometown of New Orleans. For the next ten years, he played in bands led by Armand J. Piron. This was a very important time for his musical growth. During the 1920s, Steve Lewis also shared his piano skills with others. He taught piano to students, including the future jazz star Luis Russell. He also worked as a bandleader and played music for many different events.

Steve Lewis's Unique Style

Steve Lewis was known for being a very interesting person. He drove a special car, a Ford Model T. This car was painted in bright, colorful polka-dots! It definitely stood out.

His Unusual Piano Technique

Steve Lewis had a very unusual way of playing the piano. He did not use his two middle fingers. Instead, he kept these fingers extended straight while he played. This made his piano playing style truly one-of-a-kind.

Influences and Legacy

Steve Lewis was inspired by other great pianists. These included Tony Jackson and Jelly Roll Morton. After these older musicians left New Orleans, Steve Lewis became the top pianist in the famous Storyville area. He was known as the best at playing the piano there. Towards the end of his life, Steve Lewis received care in a facility in Louisiana. He passed away around 1941.
