Becoming a Lawmaker
Steve Livermont decided to run for a seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives in 2016. This is where state laws are made. He ran as a Republican.
In 2016, one of the two seats for District 27 was open. This was because the person who held it before, Kevin Killer, decided to run for a different position. Steve Livermont and another Republican, Liz Marty May, ran for these seats. They did not have any opponents in the Republican primary election.
In the main election in 2016, Steve Livermont and Liz Marty May ran against candidates from other parties. These included Red Dawn Foster and Jim Bradford from the Democratic Party, and Everette McKinley, who ran as an independent. Steve Livermont won one of the two seats, and Liz Marty May won the other.
Running for Re-election
